More than 256,000 tourists mainly from the US, China, Germany and different African countries visited Ethiopia in the first quarter of Ethiopian fiscal year. According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Ethiopia earned 959 million USD from tourists.

The quarterly revenue has seen a 9.9 percent increase compared to the same period of the preceding year, Gezahegn Abate, Public and International Relations Director of the Ministry told journalists on Monday.

Abate attributed the increment to the better peace and stability prevailing after protests had rocked the nation and affected the flow of tourists in the east African nation. The number of visitors had declined in the past two years because of the instabilities in some parts of the country, he said.

However, because of the joint efforts of the people, the government, and regional bureaus, the number of tourists increased over the past six months.

Since early this year, Ethiopia through its embassies is promoting the new Ethiopia tourism brand, “Land of Origins”. The country had in the past used the brand, “13th month of sunshine”. Ethiopia hopes to attract more than one million tourists in the 2017-18 fiscal year.
