Ethiopian runners took a double win at the 23th Acea Maratona di Roma, held yesterday in a heavy rainy day. Shura Kitata Tola, 20, closed with a time of 2:07:30, just 13 seconds off the course record, while Rahma Chota Tusa, 23, doubled last year win (2:27:23). Both the new champions set a personal best.
The leading women crossed halfway with a time of 1:14:23. Tusa dropped all her rivals a couple of km later and cruised towards the win. In the final kilometres she was very fatigued, but nobody was able to catch her anyway. He set a PB of 2:27:23.
“Next year I would like to be back in Rome for a third win in a row like my training-mate Firehiwot Dado”, she said, referring to the strong Etiophian who won in 2009, 2010 and 2011. “I was very confident, in the final I knew that the other guys were one or two minutes behind.” Ethiopia’s Mestawot Shankutie Tadesse (2:31:41) and Abeba Tekulu Gebremeskel (2:32:08) took the podium as well.
