Design week has been going on for a week with themed days focusing on the overall advancement of various expanses we need to be catching up with. Since the opening day, January 14th last Saturday, it has been an ongoing event that attracted the attention of many due interest from lifestyle to the very trending topic technology.
Each themed day included number of exhibitors. Those who have been working on their projects for years and also new launchers. It was advantageous to be introduced to what could be the next big thing from the very start.
The week was sectioned within Architecture and urban planning, Food and Gastronomy, Art and multimedia + Industrial Design, Visual communication, Technology, Fashion, Industrial Design and interiors.
On January 14th , Architecture and urban planning, exhibited the works by the faculty and students of EiABC centering Addis Ababa becoming that accessed the previous state of the city and the future probability. The event also included a panel discussion of Re-imaging industrial zones hosted by East Africa Holding in partnership with EiABC. The day was sealed with a final show within Architecture and art in contemporary Ethiopian heritage at Addis Fine Arts with guest speakers Associate Professor Fasil Georgis, Architects Brook Tefera and Dawit Benti moderated by Helawi sewnet.
January 15th , Food and Gastronomy took over the theme in inclusion of life style by design at Tila Health center where fitness demonstrations showcased treatments, nail bar and saloon and products. Later on the day castle wine tasting paired with food eased the day’s hustle through a beautiful presentation and staging at the Vault.
Art and multimedia, on January 16th, presented the next big projects and individuals exposing the new emerging talents in art and multimedia. The works of Ankeboot publishing house, Yonas Hailu, Yohaness “Jay” balcha, Dagmawit Taye, Temesgen,core ways industrial Design and Mistere Gossaye were presented on the evening.
Visual Communications, that took place on January 17th was also another special night as it was an exposure for all the emerging insightful and engaging ideas behind the young enthusiasts of their own marque. Aside from the exhibition Girar Creative Hub launched that night, which offers incubation, mentorship, and Financial and Business development. The hub is powered by Mado + Systorn communication and advertising agency.
There were quite a number of people attending the event and also fans of exhibitors. The Arbegna Project By Yohaness “Jay” Balcha was also a piece that lured the attentions of many. Where the bygone legends were displayed in a futuristic and present manner.
Later on the night Philipp Schutz presented about a Graphic Design in progress: heritage, inspiration and typography.
Technology night was quite a turn out. It was powered by D5 gamecon at The Golden Tulip January 18th. It was enriching to see not only tech fanatics but actually remarkable young developers, designers, illustrators and whatnot all in one presenting their works in an advanced at the same time engaging manner to all the attendees. Briefing started by Markos lemma Co-founder of Iceaddis about new startups to look out for in 2017. Later on Hiwot bishaw along a student at the girls can code program gave a presentation on their projects empowering girls for their involvement in technology.
The theme included D5 and the new game they are going to launch on January 26, Girls Can Code, Smart link, Icoglabs, Laughing Gas, Gamify Addis, Jumiya Travel, Anadoo tee and Eternal media.
Again the days were diversely themed covering all the areas of our daily life aspects. Next to technology Design week to us through an eventful Fashion evening at Alle school of fine art. It was an exhibition of fashion photography paired with emerging fashion showcase in partnership with British council.
The fashion themed event also had a fashion Photography workshop facilitated by Kenyan photographer Barbra minishi and stylest Alae Ismail from UK along Kiran Wolisa. Emerging Fashion showcase featured JMMY TMSgN BY Jimmie Temesgen sandberg and Lego Fashion by Selome Kiflu.
Last but not least, the industrial section featured DWAA in Dubai Re-cap paired with Actuel Urban living new collection and showroom event at Kdisco Industrial Park. Works of Jomo Tariku “ Jomo Furniture” and Hamere Eleni “ Actuel Urban Living” were presented.
Later on the event was sealed through another launch of Rainbow Design Center and show room.
Design week will come to an end tomorrow with a uniting brunch event at the vault.
