AUC, and the 13-man Jury of the All Africa Music Awards have released the highly anticipated 2016 Nominees for the Continental Categories of Africa’s leading awards project.

What is Afrima?



All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, is designed to promote the distinct rich African music worldwide, engaging millions of fans by propelling African music to glorious pinnacles beyond the borders of Africa.
In Africa, music is always seen as inseparable from human existence. It carries long traditions and values that are associated with the people and represents part of their identities.
Music in African societies, as it functions in many different societies in the world, has enormous value. Music, either making it or listening to it, is linked to life experiences and peoples’ culture.

As such, sweet, feel good experiences need to be created for the millions of followers of African music all over the world for them to understand and appreciate Africa’s culture. Hence, the birth of AFRIMA to inspire
generations and celebrate African music.

Consequently, Nigeria, a beautiful country known for its energy and warm hospitality won the rights above 13 other countries to host the AFRIMA for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016.

AFRIMA is a combined effort to recognize, award, promote and preserve Africa’s rich music culture. In partnership with the African Union, AU, it is expected to be the biggest music event in Africa.

Debates, ideas, strategies have taken place over the last three years to identify a gap in the market place and most importantly to close that gap. Also to create a brand that will truly live up to the expectations of its internal and external stakeholders.

Deliberations and conferencing included regional directors and strategists from the SADEC, Eastern Africa, Central Africa, North and West Africa.

AFRIMA has five Regional Directors and 54 Country Directors as part of the decision making organs.

The African Union Commission, AUC, and the 13-man Jury of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, have released the highly anticipated 2016 Nominees List for the Continental Categories of Africa’s leading awards project.

The 2016 AFRIMA Continental Nominees List was released to the public via the media and on the AFRIMA website on Tuesday, September 6, two weeks after the Nominees list for the Regional Categories of the awards were unveiled on Monday, August 22 at a Press Conference in Lagos. The 22 continental nomination categories include different music genres, as well as coveted categories of “Artiste of the Year in Africa”, “Best Video in Africa”, “Best Producer in Africa”, “Best Songwriter in Africa” and “Revelation of the Year in Africa”.

This year also saw the introduction of an innovative category by the International Jury of AFRIMA titled “African Fans Favourite”, to recognise African artistes who create chartbusting, anthemic songs that propel the artistes to great popularity within and outside their respective countries and regions.

The Regional Categories which featured Best Female Artistes and Best Male Artistes of the five regions, nominated 65 artistes while 184 nominees make up the newly released continental categories with online public voting expected to begin on Monday, September 12 on the AFRIMA voting platform domiciled on


Public voting for the nominees in the different categories of the awards opens on Monday, September 12 and ends Saturday, November 5.

Ethiopian Nominees include

  1. Best Artist In African Reggae, Ragga & Dancehall- Anteneh Minalu- Wayo
  2. Best Group/Band in R&B and Soul- Henok & Mehari Brothers – Ewedishalehu
  3. Most Promising Artist – Anteneh Minalu- Wayo
  4. Best Artist/Group In African Rock- Jano Band- Darigne.
  5. Best African Group- Jano Band- Darigne.
  6. Best Female Artist, Eastern Africa- Fikeraddis Nekatebeb- Misekir
