Civilization Without Chivalry/ The Uncivilized Us.

Civilization is the stage of human social development and organization which is considered most advanced. An “advanced” state of human society in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached. As defined through a common agreement. And;

Uncivilized- crude, barbarous, wild, uncultured, those who display a marked lack of manners as defined by a given culture, rude and savage.

Then there is chivalry

Chivalry- medieval knightly system with its religious, moral and social code. The combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, namely courage, honour, courtesy, justice and readiness to help the week.

So we all know that the medieval age was considered to be the “uncivilized” one due to their way of life. That’s why the world needed change. Back then people were considered as the uncivilized ones as to the system of life…

The Stone Age has passed with all the haunt, people no more set fire with rocks and sticks, men no more kidnap young girls for marriage somewhat nor are harmed through the cultural practices. Has the world come to be better?

Well that depends who we’re asking.

If we are considering modernization as civilization that’s something, for our world has come from nothing to the ongoing advancement progressing too fast. We are way far from the systems used back then in to leading our lives. We are way ahead through technology and that leaves us modernized but uncivilized as we are way backward in morals and common sense.

Back to chivalry, chivalry might have been the knighthood act through the medieval ages mostly in Europe in between 1250-1350. But I could say the same as for our soldiers back in the ages. Back then the whole duty of a gentleman was included in the idea of chivalry which regulated his life from his early childhood through the three principal factors religion, war and love.

Here are the ten commandments of the medieval code of chivalry

The Ten Commandments of the Code of Chivalry

From Chivalry by Leon Gautier

  1. Thou shalt believe all that the Church teaches, and shalt observe all its directions.
  2. Thou shalt defend the Church.
  3. Thou shalt respect all weaknesses, and shalt constitute thyself the defender of them.
  4. Thou shalt love the country in which thou wast born.
  5. Thou shalt not recoil before thine enemy.
  6. Thou shalt make war against the Infidel without cessation, and without mercy.
  7. Thou shalt perform scrupulously thy feudal duties, if they be not contrary to the laws of God.
  8. Thou shalt never lie, and shall remain faithful to thy pledged word.
  9. Thou shalt be generous, and give largess to everyone.
  10. Thou shalt be everywhere and always the champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil.

The Code of Chivalry

From the Rifts: England Supplement

  • Live to serve King and Country.
  • Live to defend Crown and Country and all it holds dear.
  • Live one’s life so that it is worthy of respect and

  • Live for freedom, justice and all that is good.
  • Never attack an unarmed foe.
  • Never use a weapon on an opponent not equal to the attack.
  • Never attack from behind.
  • Avoid lying to your fellow man. Avoid cheating. Avoid torture.
  • Obey the law of king, country, and chivalry.
  • Administer justice.
  • Exhibit self control.
  • Show respect to authority.
  • Respect women.
  • Exhibit Courage in word and deed.
  • Defend the weak and innocent.
  • Destroy evil in all of its monstrous forms.
  • Crush the monsters that steal our land and rob our people.
  • Fight with honor.
  • Avenge the wronged. Protect the innocent.

And yet, those were the uncivilized times. Well I say we are very far from civilization again as to the agreed definition. Taking a look to our world and humanity in all, it’s hard to say we are at an “advanced” state of human society in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached. We may have achieved the science and industry area but that shouldn’t be enough. We have come to be crude, barbarous, wild, uncultured, those who display a marked lack of manners as defined by a given culture, rude and savage. And where does that leave us?

We no longer have culture, pride and ego replaced manner, leaders have become power hungered savages, where society has settled for what’s safe individually, patriotism has fled the country, no morals, no love. What is to be civilized without chivalry?

We have come to live on grounds many have died to give, died with courage and out of love, yet we flee. Including myself, I would rather leave than fight, not cuz I am a coward but simply because I do not know what patriotism is, do not have that figure worth dying for. We all fight against each other and not along, innocent blood is being shed all around just because leaders are leading their personal craves and people are following their guts. Back in days when a war was fought whatever the reason might be, the king and queens lead the way, fighting to the last hour, soldiers leaving their comfortable and settled homes and families to stand in the way of injustice, wives then take their husbands place and lead their homes, everyone was a leader, all because they saw something worth the fight and all the loss.

Now children are raised studying the future without a clue of the past, taking a history lesson is never enough when what they see and what they are being told is very contradicting. The uprising generation are not fit enough to take on their country’s responsibility they have not been raised through. And of course there is not a single figure they would aspire to become.

As the saying, “chivalry is dead”. Looking through the three principal factors again, religion, war and love. I don’t see a single area where we are active on. As for religion, we have started killing “religiously” instead of simply building on our morals, when all we need is just a common sense before we act as moral and a simple common sense could be a great religion by itself, and as for war, well the world is full of it but we have chosen not to join any of the parade till that moment comes when one of their fireworks come flying over our heads, and by then we’ll run. Finally love, hmmmm, either love has changed its definition or we never knew love at all, as love has become a part time area one sets along their life goals mostly on the last line, and not an act of giving, sacrifice and a way of life by itself.

We have come to be the selfish beings, where we all run for a personal gain, where we are silenced through misery unless that misery comes knocking on our very own door. We have nothing to live for or to die. Just a hypnotized society in mass believing the luring pictures presented to us, deaf to the cries, ignorant that we are stepping on the weak as our eyes are fixed to that something we crave to have for ourselves, in short we could say survival of the fittest.

“We have allowed our civilization to outrun our culture; we have allowed our technology to outdistance our theology and for this reason we find ourselves caught up with many problems”

-Martin luther king

To conclude this article, we might want to revise either our “civilized” acts or the definition.
