On June 9 2016, the number of people suffering from acute watery diarrhea was reported to be increasing and that the disease could be epidemic through the weeks. The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) confirmed the outbreak and In its official statement, the Ministry advised Addis Ababa residents to take precautionary measures, including ensuring personal hygiene and environmental sanitation. Individuals exhibiting AWD disease symptoms should immediately seek medical help. The disease was said to be mainly caused due to the flood happening at the time.
Apart from that, around 80 hotels and restaurants that were found giving careless and untidy service to the society were closed as reported by the Addis Ababa Food, Medicine and Health Administration and Control Authority. Thus authority also informed that they had visited restaurants and hotels around, through their visit into the depth of the kitchens to check on materials, way of disposal and tidiness, they have found more than 10 thousand kilos of food and 120 kilos of meat to be life threatening and was sent to disposal.
Aside from the suspension of the hotels and restaurants, 10 clinics and 2 hospitals were also banned as they were not giving the proper care and treatment for those who came to the place diagnosed.
