DESTINO is an Ethiopian social enterprise born to support underprivileged young people in developing their inner-potential through dance. It aims at providing art education, creating a professional dance academy in Addis Ababa and spreading Ethiopian-contemporary dance in Ethiopia and abroad. DESTINO was founded in February 2014 by two professional contemporary dancers, Addisu Demissie and Junaid Jemal Sendi. Trained from streets to stage at a young age, the two dancers now wish to give back the chance that they were given.
“We use dance to promote social change. We believe dance can be a perfect tool for giving opportunities to young people who have none. We were lucky to be given a chance twenty years ago, a handful of people that believed in us. Our mission is to use dance to transfer what we learnt and transform the lives of other young boys and girls, so they can become proud and confident persons, able to create their own future.
Therefore, at DESTINO, we work with young people from the community, involving the underprivileged and marginalized who do not usually have a space for self-expression, to develop their skills and sense of self-awareness through dance. Some of them are already involved in performances and events.” the team addresses.
