Red carpet season is right around the corner, and the race to the Oscars is kicking into high gear. One star who has been making her mark at premieres around the globe is Ruth Negga. Last night at the Mill Valley Film Festival in California, Negga made a bold fashion move, opting for an unexpected evening look: a simple T-shirt and extravagant ball skirt, both by Chanel. But it’s not the first time that the Ethiopian-Irish actress has made waves on the carpet. At the Cannes Film Festival this past May, she went for a fashion-forward frock from Marc Jacobs; for the Toronto Film Festival, it was a tropical printed dress from Valentino; and last week, she pulled off a modern-day flapper look in Prada.
It’s perhaps her willingness to experiment with different silhouettes and unexpected eveningwear combinations that makes her personal style stand out in a crowd; last night’s Chanel ensemble was a perfect example. “We wanted something that felt appropriate to the cool spirit of the Mill Valley Film Festival,” said Negga’s stylist, Karla Welch. “I saw it when it showed at Resort in Cuba and loved it, but we decided to mellow it out with the cool white tee.” With Negga poised to scoop up several nominations in the upcoming months, it’s clear that the actress and her stylist already have a fashion game plan brewing. Their red carpet style mantra, according to Welch? “Dare to be different!”
