The peasants protest about the constructed site for solid waste disposal at Oromia city sedafa town has left the city reeking. The residents of the town have protested and refused that the government to dump toxic waste in to their land. The issue here is that the liquid formed when waste breaks down in the landfill and water filters through that waste is highly toxic and pollutes the land, ground water and water ways.
The city has been covered under pile of waste for weeks now and there is no plan underway to solve this dangerous problem. The health effects related to improper waste disposal should be given serious concern. The accumulated waste all over the city pose a great health threat to the community.
Most of the solid wastes, like paper, plastic containers, bottles, cans, and even used cars and electronic goods are not biodegradable, which means they do not get broken down through inorganic or organic processes. Thus, when they accumulate they pose a health threat to people, plus, decaying wastes also attract household pests and result in urban areas becoming unhealthy, dirty, and unsightly places to reside in. Moreover, it also causes damage to terrestrial organisms, while reducing the uses of the land for other, more useful purposes.
Sanitation is the hygienic means of promoting health through prevention of human contact with the hazards of wastes as well as the treatment and proper disposal of sewage or wastewater. Hazards can be either physical, microbiological, biological or chemical agents of disease. Sanitation and hygiene are critical to health, survival, and development. Relevant diseases and conditions caused by lack of sanitation and hygiene include: Waterborne diseases, Diseases transmitted by the fecal-oral route, Infections with intestinal helminths (worms),Stunted growth in children, Malnutrition just to name the few. And it was reported very recently that AWD (Acute Watery Diarrhea) to be aggravated through the coming weeks ahead in our very own city by the FMoH.
That is just from the health aspect, but when we also look through it, Addis Ababa, where the AU headquarters is stationed at, where lots of conferences are being held at these days at the same time covered in the pile of wastes that are critical to health issues out in the open, is simply sending the wrong message and being falsely represented for carelessness and ignorance of such a matter especially at the capital city.
The bottom line is that bad waste management practices can result in land and air pollution and can cause respiratory problems and other adverse health effects as contaminants are absorbed from the lungs into other parts of the body. Apart from infectious diseases, improper disposal of refuse will also result to leachate and contamination of ground water and this can result in poisoning of bore holes.
If the responsible bodies for the sanitation of the city don’t take action on the matter beforehand, the danger it will cause and is already is going will turn out to a disaster to simply be dealt with.
